With the launch of KDG Residential, we interviewed our principal and co-founder Seth Emerson as he recounts his 30-year career and journey in residential design, the philosophy behind his works, and what he thinks KDG will bring to the table for home owners and home builders. Read more after the break! Q: What is your background, how did you get started with residential architecture, and what does it mean for you? Seth Emerson: I started with a small Firm in Charlotte, NC that only did high-end residential projects. Some of our clients included NFL and NASCAR coaches and players. Residential architecture has always been more about relationships for me. It is one of my favorite things to create a space that is unique to and a reflection of each individual client’s personality and tastes. Q: What is your design philosophy? SE: To listen to my clients. To really try to understand what they are imagining and then bring their ideas to life. Q: What are your thoughts about interiors and the role they play? SE: Interiors are extremely important in the overall “feel” of a home since it is an immersive experience. as opposed to the exterior, where you are more of a spectator. Because of this perspective, Interiors contribute more than anything in invoking an emotional response. Q: Could you give an example of a challenging but rewarding design problem you've come across? SE: I had a couple once that were at odds about the style of house they wanted. The wife preferred a more traditional English cottage, while the husband wanted a very rustic mountain home. This initially posed a challenge, but in the end, I was ab le to blend the two styles and give both of them what they wanted. I would receive updates from the couple during construction letting me know how well the design was turning out and how excited they were. Q: What are the most common problems homeowners face that could be avoided with good design? SE: I think mainly the overall function of a house and how the owners intend to use it. Each client is unique and a little extra thought into how they will live and function in the home goes a long way. Q: What is a fun fact about residential design? SE: Anyone who has ever spent hours scrolling through house plans and home ideas has probably come to the conclusion that there are roughly ninety billion different home styles and designs. That's why understanding the specific vision of the client is so important. Q: Finally, what do you think KDG Residential will bring to the table, in Woodland Park, Colorado Springs and beyond? SE: I think we bring an honest approach to the design process. We are genuinely invested in seeing the homeowner’s vision brough to life rather than our own.
