Read Now

Unless you are a seasoned builder, the process of getting a building permit could be daunting. Professional architects like KDG are experienced in the plan approval process and can provide you with the documentation and deliverables that are required by your city.

Every city has its own unique set of requirements, but we can distill the process generally in the following steps:
  • Contact your city to find out what they require for a building permit. Usually, the first step is to visit their website and look for the Permits tab. The city's website should also tell you which versions of the International Building Code is in effect locally.
  • Download or access the online version of the application form. This will give you an even better idea of the required documents and drawings.
  • Prepare the documents and drawings required with the help of an architect, and submit the application. This often involves a code study which would include calculations of your building's occupant load and the distances travelled to reach an exit.
  • Wait for the building department to review your documents and drawings, this could take up to a couple of weeks or longer. If you are missing information in your application, or if your building design doesn't meet a certain code or regulation, they will highlight it to you for correction, upon which you would resubmit it to the review queue.
  • Once your plans are approved, you will receive the building permit. Usually, there is a fee associated that has to be paid to obtain the permit.
